Lezama Park is a public park in the San Telmo district of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Lezama Park began to show its age in recent decades, a development dramatized by the theft of a number of the park's many decorative urns and bronzes
Historians believe the park's eastern barranca to have been the site of Spanish Conquistador Pedro de Mendoza's landing on what became the first, failed attempt to establish Buenos Aires in 1536. Well to the south of the colonial hamlet, the land was first purchased by Manuel Gallego y Valcárcel around 1790. The lot was later purchased by a succession of English Argentines, the last of whom, Charles Ridgley Horne, improved and expanded the property, raising a baroque mansion on the land's western edge, Defensa Street. Allied to the repressive paramount Governor of Buenos Aires, Juan Manuel de Rosas, Ridgley Horne was forced into exile after the strongman's 1852 overthrow, however, and the land was sold to José Gregorio Lezama, who added adjoining lots to the north and gave the green space its current dimensions.

Vik Muniz: Painting with Chocolate

Vik Muniz is one of the smartest and funniest artists that I have had the pleasure of working with. Last year, as part of the Artist’s Choice exhibition series, Muniz curated a show drawn from the Museum’s collection, and I worked closely with him to realize the project, titled Rebus. Muniz’s installation was one of the most memorable exhibitions from the series, and it gave me insight into the artist’s working process. This collaboration resulted from a long and ongoing relationship—since Muniz first exhibited his work at MoMA in 1997 in New Photography 13, the Museum has been showing and collecting his photographs. MoMA has recently added to the collection a key picture by Muniz, Action Photo, after Hans Namuth from Pictures of Chocolate, and we hope to continue our exploration and appreciation of this leading artist’s work.

To make his work, Muniz renders familiar images drawn from pop culture and art history in a variety of materials, and then photographs them. He has fashioned the Mona Lisa from peanut butter and jelly, Elizabeth Taylor from diamonds, Caravaggio’s Narcissus from junk, iconic news images from wet ink, and his self-portrait from dice. Muniz has referred to himself as an “illusionist,” and, with characteristic humor and ingenuity, explores the nature of representation in an image-saturated world.

One of Muniz’s most well-known bodies of work is a series of pictures rendered in chocolate sauce. Action Photo, after Hans Namuth (1997) is made after a 1950 photograph taken by Hans Namuth of Jackson Pollock frozen in mid-dance as he was making one of his paintings, Autumn Rhythm. Muniz’s subsequent appropriation and translation of this image into chocolate is a perfect marriage of subject and material. The viscous chocolate syrup (incidentally, he used the brand Bosco) is a perfect stand-in for Pollock’s wet, shiny paint drips. This new acquisition not only strengthens the Museum’s Muniz holdings, but is a welcome complement to MoMA’s rich Pollock collection.

Drinking the yerba mate is considered to be more than just good for the body; it's also good for the soul. Drinking it can be a form of meditation or reflection - allowing the goodness to infuse into the body while stimulating and resting the mind. Those who share the mate join in a kind of bond of total acceptance and friendship. Generally the server will start a new infusion and then take the first drink. This is considered an act of kindness by the other people in the circle, because usually the first serving is considered the worst.[
Mate is served with a metal straw from a shared hollow calabash gourd. The straw is called a bombilla in Latin American Spanish. The straw is traditionally made of silver. Modern commercially available straws are typically made of nickel silver, called Alpaca, stainless steel, or hollow-stemmed cane. The gourd is known as a mate. Even if the water comes in a very modern thermos, the infusion is traditionally drunk from mates. However, "tea-bag" type infusions of mate (mate cocido) have been on the market in Argentina for many years under such trade names as "Cruz de Malta".

On the eve of the release, the Haitian MC/songwriter/producer is giving Billboard.com visitors an exclusive listen to the track "Warrior's Anthem" off the EP..
"I signed an autograph for a kid, 'Clef from the Fugees' / The kid looked at me and said, 'What the hell is the Fugees? / Ain't you will.i.am from the Peas?' I'm a fan, but no I ain't will.i.am / let me introduce myself to the new generation / I'm Wyclef Jean, singer,songwriter,composer / in highschool I used to be a battle rapper / then I got with the Fugees, hi haters / 15 years later I still sold more records than all of y'all put together," Jean assertively clarifies over a choir-like production with minimal drums.
"When you get to a certain point in your career, people forget where you came from. So now, Toussaint is going to show everyone my skills and how I got started in hip-hop," explains Jean of the album, which is hosted by DJ Drama and features Timbaland, Eve, Lil Kim and an electrifying collaboration with Cyndi Lauper.
"From the hut is where we come from - where we ride donkeys to school. Dudes in the states don't know what latrines are," he says. "For us, by the time we got to the projects we thought we were in a mansion -- that's what an upgrade it was from back home. But then we were finally there when we got to the mansion. The point is, whatever you want to do you can accomplish. If I came from nothing and became something, if I was chosen for greatness, than, so can you."
Other stand-out tracks include "The Streets Pronouce Me Dead," which finds Jean addressing all the naysayers, and the Lauper-assisted "Slumdog Millionaire," on which she sings, "We don't care what you say, from the hut to the projects to the mansion, now a millionaire / if you come from the hood, expect nothing less / I wanna see get your money," on the chorus.
Jean is currently working on his upcoming self-titled album titled, slated for a March 20 release. He will also perform at New York's Nokia Theater on Monday (Nov. 9) as part of a partnership with Western Union for their "Random Acts of Giving" holiday campaign.

The political and social activities for three decades held in Mexico the Nobel Prize in Literature 1982, the Colombian Gabriel García Márquez, were recorded in the files of a defunct Mexican intelligence body, local media reported Monday.

The newspaper El Universal published from declassified files of the defunct Federal Security Directorate (DFS) documenting activities of the writer at that time.

Activities include meetings with European leaders, like France's Francois Mitterrand, and Latin American leftists, mainly from Chile, Colombia and El Salvador, and its proximity to the government of Fidel Castro.

"The house was a consulate Gabo alternative," says the paper, from the intelligence reports ranging from the 60s (when the Colombian was installed in Mexico) and 1985. Since that year, records continued to be classified at the Center for Investigation and National Security.

"The Colombian national writer Jorge Timossi informed, director of the Cuban news agency Prensa Latina that all rights to the book" Chronicle of a Death Foretold 'belong to the government of Cuba, because he's presented, "appears in one files.

The author was under careful surveillance since the 70s and although she failed to penetrate his inner circle for information, it was wiretapping.

In October San Telmo relaunched its own design circuit in the framework of the Metropolitan Design Center which declared October as the Month of Design in Buenos Aires. Different designers of the city will gather to show various proposals that define today the personality of the neighborhood. New trends coexist with the traditional customs, history and wealth of this eclectic neighborhood, thereby forming an interesting range of possibilities.

San Telmo is the pioneer of the rescue of the design - even before the term "Vintage" took to the streets, shop windows and magazines today - through its revalued its characteristic architecture and antique shops and fairs, historical paradigms of design of yesteryear. But that's not all, protection and circulation of the styles that left traces in time and in the history of design also offers the ideal environment to house the proposed contemporary objects and clothing.

The “XV Festival Internacional Guitarras del Mundo 2009” will take place from October 6th through October 18th, 2009, with free entrance to the public.

For the past 15 years, the Festival "Guitarras del Mundo" has remained the biggest world wide event dedicated to guitars and guitar players, in which over 700 artists have participated and 36 countries from America, Europe, Asia and Africa have been represented.
"Guitarras del Mundo" features regional music from around the world as well as new musical pieces, promoting at the same time meetings among different guitar schools.

New York vocalist Victoria Frigerio first recorded with George Acosta (Planet Soul/Strictly Rythm) the hit single "I'm missing you (I'm gonna take you higher)" in 1994. She went on to work with Maurice Star (New Kids on the Block) and then Chris Brann (Wamdue Project) with whom she released the international hits "King of my castle" and "You're the reason". In 2000 she released the hit "Mare Grande" with Italian artist-producer Stefano Gamma (Freak Do Brazil). Tango is a deep-rooted tradition of dance, poetry and song, tied closely to the Rio de la Plata region of the two countries, and remains popular in competition, for pleasure, and for health - doctors worldwide are experimenting with tango as dance therapy to treat problems ranging from Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease to phobias and marital breakdowns.

On September 30th, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) added 76 new items to its "List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity", for safeguarding and preservation. The "Intangible" list is a companion to UNESCO's World Heritage list, which focuses on physical sites worldwide. Submitted jointly by member states Argentina and Uruguay, the "symbolic universe" of tango was among the traditions added to the list.

The 12th Buenos Aires International Biennial of Architecture BA09will take place from October 3rd to 12th at the Recoleta Cultural Center, bringing together the world's most prominent architects, and turning the city of Buenos Aires into the center of the global architecture for ten days.

The Buenos Aires International Biennial of Architecture, that takes place since 1985, is one of the most important exhibitions along with the Venice and San Pablo Biennials.

The exhibition of works will be held from October 3rd to 12th. A series of conferences will take place from Tuesday 6th to Friday 9th, where invited speakers will show their works, share their experiences and creative processes.

This competition started in 1911 as an annual painting and sculpture exhibition hall sponsored by the Fine Arts National Commission. Since 1932, Palais de Glace is the permanent venue for the Salon Nacional de Artes Visuales.

The Salón Nacional de Artes Visuales, which takes place every year at Palais de Glace, is the most important contest in Argentina in the field of fine arts, covering painting, sculpture, engraving, drawing, photography, ceramics, textile art, and new supports and installations.

Paterimon: A Must-See Rock Band

Paterimon will be presenting his new album for the first time in La Trastienda-San Telmo on Thursday 10 September at 9pm.

This powerful rock group with bases in hardcore, Punk & pop will anticipate some of the coming up tracks of his new album "Regalitos".

The album was conceived by Jorge Kontos (voice and guitar), Pablo Kontos, bass & vocals and Jeremías Tvethe, on drums.

Energetic and daring, Regalitos was recorded live at the band room, with battery , hi-low and guitar. The whole idea was to get not edited shots, just like old times.

La Trastienda, a San Telmo institution, brings in respected artists from all over to play its intimate stage. Some shows are seated affairs; others pack 1,000-plus into the small space to listen and dance to jazz, blues, tango, salsa, reggae, or rock.

The Band will play for first time in the same stage where World-renowned musicians like Maceo Parker, Café Tacuba, Jorge Drexler, and Kevin Johansen have played.

Paterimon is one of the first Argentinean Bands who Offers Free Download via its own Web site.

August is THE month to be in Buenos Aires in case you're one of many who come here to taste the city of Tango.
Between 14 and 23 August the City offers the greatest tango Festival, featuring free shows, exclusive performances, tributes, premieres of original productions, lectures, seminars, interdisciplinary spaces and appearances by both established and emerging artists of the genre. Classic Bars and Coffehouses of San Telmo

1. Bar El Federal.

This building of 1864 still has its Italian architectonic style. Originally it was a groceries store, but after many years it turned to a beverages dispatcher. The counter is more than a hundred years old.

It opened in 1967 on the ground floor of a 1910 building. The tables and chairs are Viennese styled. There are pictures and drawing by the renowned artist Maximo Paz. It has been visited by prestigious personalities, and since 1989 it gives place to the Tango Cultural Centre.

6. Bar El Viejo Almacén.

This old store goes back to the year 1798. In 1969 tango legend Edmundo Rivero bought it to turn it into one of the most important Tango places in the city.

7. Bar Seddon.

Towards late 20th Century, the Seddon Bar was located in the corner of 25 de Mayo st. and Cordoba Ave. The current chairs, tables and counter were bought in auction to other bars

8. Bar Plaza Dorrego.

Inaugurated in 1968. The tiled checkered floor is quite distinctive of the place. The wooden bar is “L” shaped and it has an old cash register. Behind old ginever, cognac and anisette bottles are shown.

9. Bar El Hipopótamo.

This bar, restored in the year 2000, retains the original style and decoration of very old original ads.

10. Bar Británico.

It remains as one of the most traditional places in Buenos Aires. It’s named after the English immigrants whom established in the area at the time of the rail construction.

1) What can I do to protect myself from catching influenza A (H1N1)?
The main route of transmission of the new influenza A(H1N1) virus seems to be similar to seasonal influenza, via droplets that are expelled by speaking, sneezing or coughing. You can prevent getting infected by avoiding close contact with people who show influenza-like symptoms (trying to maintain a distance of about 1 metre if possible) and taking the following measures:
• avoid touching your mouth and nose;
• clean hands thoroughly with soap and water, or cleanse them with an alcohol-based hand rub on a regular basis (especially if touching the mouth and nose, or surfaces that are potentially contaminated);
• avoid close contact with people who might be ill;
• reduce the time spent in crowded settings if possible;
• improve airflow in your living space by opening windows;
• practice good health habits including adequate sleep, eating nutritious food, and keeping physically active.

2) How long does the virus live in a flat surface or handle?
Up to 10 hours.

3) How useful is the alcohol to clean your hands?
Very, it backs off the virus and kills him.

4) How can I avoid infection?
Do not take your hands to the face, eyes, nose and mouth. Not to be with sick people. Wash your hands more than 10 times a day.

5) What is the way the virus enters the body?
Contact by shaking hands or kissing on the cheek and the nose, mouth and eyes.

6) Is the virus lethal?

1. Secretariat of Agriculture, Stockbreeding and Fishing (Paseo Colon 922)
A building complex designed by architect Andrés Vanelli e Hijos and Kimbau y Co. The neo-Gothic style buildings are located on the avenue and bear the entire superb quality established for public works at the end of the 19th century and beginnings of the 20th century.

2. School of Engineering (Paseo Colon 850)
Neoclassic style building, replicating that of the School of Law. It is the outcome of State architectural conception of middle of the 20th century. It formerly seated the ex María Eva Duarte de Perón Foundation.

3. "Canto al Trabajo" Monument (Paseo Colon 800)
This monument made by the Argentine sculptor Rogelio de Yrurtia (1879-1950) is a sculptural group of 14 human bronze-made figures which allegoricaly express the freeing meaning of labour and the dignity of women as a support in the life of men.

4. Pasaje San Lorenzo (Estados Unidos and Balcarce streets)
In this alley -two blocks long- we can visit the Galeria de los Patios de San Telmo, a typical large house of the 18th century, populated by artisans and artists' ateliers.

5. "Casa Mínima": The Minimum House (San Lorenzo 380)
Its front is hardly 2,20 meters wide. It is part of an old construction of the second decade of the 19th century. This type of houses –annexed to the main house- used to be inhabited by slaves.

6. Sur Cafe (Intersection of Estados Unidos and Balcarce streets)
It opened its doors in 1967 and became the pioneer of the night show in Buenos Aires.

7. Danish Church (Carlos Calvo 257)
The tower and the roofs are clear representatives of the neo-Gothic style. It was designed by the Danish architects Rönnow and Bisgaard. It was inaugurated in 1931.

8. House of Juan Carlos Castagnino (Balcarce 1016)
This house and the house at the corner date from the ends of the 18th century. It was the house to the artist Juan Carlos Castagnino (1908-1972), a famous painter, worldwide known because of the illustration of Martin Fierro he published in 1963.

9. Gallery of the "Viejo Hotel" (Balcarce 1053) B
Built around 1890 as a small hotel. When the neighborhood was declared as a Historical Area in 1979, the Viejo Hotel became an art gallery and atelier for painters and sculptors.

10. Antigua Tasca de Cuchilleros (Carlos Calvo 319)
The front room dates from late 18th century. The rest of the construction came further on. This place harbors a tragic love story. This was the house to Margarita, sergeant Oliden's daughter, “mazorquero” of the Governor Juan Manuel de Rosas. The father expected his daughter to marry Ciriaco Cuitiño, boss of the “mazorqueros”. But she escaped with the “payador” (wandering singer) she was in love with. Finally, they were found by Cuitiño in the town of Luján. Cuitiño shot Margarita and she returned home to die. There is nowadays a restaurant there.

11. House of Esteban de Luca (Intersection of Defensa and Carlos Calvo streets)
The house dates back to the end of the 18th century. Here it lived Esteban de Luca. He was a military man, poet and journalist. He actively participated in the English Invasions (1806-1807), as sub-lieutenant of Battalion 3 of Patricians. The house was recycled conserving the architectural elements of the time. At the moment, there is a restaurant there. It has become a National Historical Monument.

12. San Telmo Market (Surrounded by Bolívar, Carlos Calvo, Defensa, Estados Unidos streets.)
Its facade presents Italian characteristics while the interior holds an excellent iron structure roofed with foil and glass. It was inaugurated in 1897 and architect Juan Antonio Buschiazzo designed it.

13. Solar the French Gallery (Defensa street between Humberto 1º and Carlos Calvo streets)
This was the residence to patriot Domingo French. The front wing dates from 1900 -1910 while the rest dates from 1930.

14. Dorrego Square (Surrounded by Humberto Iº, Defensa, Anselmo Aieta and Bethlem streets)
Officially declared as a National Historical Place. This is the oldest square after the Plaza de Mayo. Here you can visit the Fair of Antiques on Sundays from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

15. Argentine Penitentiary Museum ‘Antonio Ballvé’ (Humberto 1º 378)
Designed by architect Antonio Masella, the building dates from 1760. Originally, it was the House of Spiritual Exercises for men. When the Jesuits were expelled in 1767, the place passed onto the Cabildo. Later and up to 1974, it functioned as a Women’s Jail in charge of the Good Shepherd's Order and the Penitentiary Service. When this Order retires in 1974, the Penitentiary is still in charge up to 1978 when the Women’s Jail is transferred to the town of Ezeiza. The interior of the building holds the chapel of Nuestra Señora del Camen, a construction from 1734.

16. Nuestra Señora de Belén Church - San Pedro Telmo Parish (Humberto 1º 340)
The construction of this church started by the end of 1734, designed by the Jesuit architect and monk Andrés Blanqui and the intervention of his partners Juan Bautista Primoli and José Schmidt. Italian master Antonio Masella continued the building and the last restoration was carried out in 1918 by architect Pelayo Sáinz. The facade is of eclectic style and presents neo-colonial architectural elements. On top you can see the image of San Pedro González Telmo. It is a National Historical Monument.

17. Protomedicato - Guillermo Rawson School (Humberto 1º 343)
In 1858, it was the first Medicine school in Buenos Aires. As of 1886, it became dependant from the Secretariat of Education. It is of a neo-colonial style architecture. The magnolia plants perfuming the entrance date back from that time.

18. La Defensa Alley (Defensa 1179)
It is a traditional large house of the decade of 1880 and was the residence of the Ezeiza family. The two-story house holds several rooms that lead to a lateral gallery. At the moment, a commercial gallery runs with shops of antique dealers, old times attires, paintings, souvenirs, etc.

19. Museum of Modern Art of Buenos Aires City Government (Av. San Juan 350)
It was formerly a deposit of Cigarrillos 43 company. The building dates from 1918 and it was recycled while keeping its original architecture of “utilitarian” style. The museum holds exhibitions of contemporary plastic art.

20. Museum of the Cinema (Defensa 1220)
The museum is open Tuesdays to Fridays from 10 am to 5 pm. It holds a films library, collections of posters, clothes, photos and documents.

21. Ex San Telmo Foundation (Defensa 1344)
It was built as a large house around 1860, and remodeled by Osvaldo Giesso in the ‘80s. At the moment, there is an art gallery -which can be visited by people- and a theatre school. Its facade replicates a house of the 18th century which blueprints are kept at the National General Bureau.

22. Russian Orthodox Church of The Sacred Trinity (Brasil 315)
This church was inaugurated in 1904. The original project was carried out by architect Mihail Preobrazensky (Sacred Synod of Russia) and adapted by architect Alejandro Christophersen. The temple has been built based on the Muscovite style of 17th century. On the facade, there is a Venetian-mosaic-made figure of the Sacred Trinity made in Saint Petersburg.

23. Lezama Park. Monument–Fountain in homage to Pedro de Mendoza (Brasil and Defensa streets)
Inauguration of this monument by Juan Carlos Oliva Navarro took place on June 23, 1937. The monument is composed of a square fountain with two drains symbolizing the River Guadalquivir and the River Plate (beginning and ending points of the expedition). The statue to Pedro de Mendoza is made of bronze and it contrasts with a bas-reliefs marble wall representing an indigenous figure. Pedro de Mendoza appears nailing the sword in the soil as a symbol of the possession of lands.

24. Lezama Park. Patio of Sculptures and Amphitheatre (Defensa, Brasil, Paseo Colón and Martín García)
Located on a natural gorge. Some people affirm that the first establishment of this city took place in these suburbs. Paul Groussac opposes to this conclusion, since he states it took place at Vuelta de Rocha. At the end of the 18th century, the Royal Company of Philippines settled the deposit of slaves down in the park. In 1806, during the First English Invasion, General Beresford entered through San Martin Street (today Defensa) devastating the last local forces on the Barranca de Marcó (today Lezama Park). Years later, the English David MacKinley installed his week-end cottage at this place, opposite the river. On the building the English flag was hoisted, and for that reason people got used to call it “the Englishmen cottage”. After successive owners, in 1857, Mr Jose Gregorio Lezama, a tradesman from Salta, acquired the property, surrounded it with a high fence of iron grills and enriched the forest atmosphere with exotic plants and trees. Towards 1871, during the yellow fever epidemic, the residence was operated as a Lazaretto. In 1889, when Lezama dies, his widow Angela Álzaga proposes the Mayor to sell the premises to the Community, with the commitment of being a public park. It took then the name of Parque Lezama.

25. Historical National Museum (Defensa 1600)
It was founded on May 24 1889. It was settled on the house of Gregorio de Lezama, in 1897. Their line follow Italian architecture, so much applied in Buenos Aires between 1850 and 1880. The premises lighten the traditions of the Revolution of May and the Wars of the Independence and other memorable periods of the national history of the 19th century.

26. Británico Cafe (Intersection of Brasil and Defensa streets)
One of the most traditional cafes in Buenos Aires. Although it is owned by Spanish people, the name is an homage to the English immigrants who settled down in that area at the time of the railway construction. Plaza Dorrego

Spending a Sunday in and around Plaza Dorrego is one of the few things that ranks as a ‘must do’ sightseeing attraction for visitors to Buenos Aires. On the seventh day of the week, when the rest of the city is resting, the city closes much of neighboring Defensa street to traffic, and this part of San Telmo explodes into a mass of around 8,000 people, locals and tourists alike. They come to peruse antiques and knickknacks, watch the outdoor tango dancing and other performers, sit for a coffee or beer outside a classic old cafe, or just aimlessly wander around the interesting chaos. This, more or less, is the Plaza Dorrego Sunday market, also known as the “Feria de San Pedro Telmo”.

Plaza Dorrego is one of the oldest public spaces in the city, dating back to the 18th century, when it was an area reserved for the wagons that brought in produce to Buenos Aires from all over the country. Just before the turn of the 19th century it was turned into a public square. The coffee shops and bars surrounding the Plaza only sprung up in the 1930s, when it became an area for wine, song and dance, as it remains today. Bar Plaza Dorrego is the most famous of these establishments, with its lovely old wooden fixtures and counter, although the former has been etched with graffiti over the years - but then many would say this adds to its charm.

The market started in 1970, and it is still going strong with more than 270 stands offering antiques, phonographs, period clothes, jewelery, old books, crafts items and other knickknacks. It is open on Sundays from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. While this fair is going on, Argentine tango and folklore singers and dancers, and other performers, put on outdoor shows throughout the day.
If you have no more than a casual interest in tango, then Plaza Dorrego on a Sunday is an excellent time and place to enjoy an introductory sampling of the dance, if you don’t want to go full out and pay 250 pesos plus for a full Tango dinner-show in Buenos Aires. Also, at around 5pm, when the stalls begin to pack up, free impromptu outdoor Tango lessons are often given in Plaza Dorrego, which can be quite good fun if you are not ashamed of making a fool of yourself in public!
If you don’t want to get that involved, it is nice just to sit outside of one of the bars that surround the Plaza and take in the performances from there, while partaking of your favorite liquid refreshment.

First, let’s describe the San Telmo that existed: beautiful, intense, rich with creativity, home to hundreds of designers and artists. Even though it seems unbelievable, only three years ago San Telmo hardly resembled the Sunday anthill of people today for those who know that the neighborhood exists beyond Plaza Dorrego.

During these three years, “San Telmo ¿qué hay de nuevo?” was born, a festival of art, music and design in the Historic District, though the national media was hesitant to admit that something like this could be born in this “dangerous and dark” neighborhood.

Those were days when a few daring businesses moved in: antique shops, timid boutiques and design stores that were heckled to stay off the most exclusive street: Defensa. There were some six art galleries and 40 bars and restaurants, a few already serving the “fusion” cuisine where portions of rice were renamed “timbales.” But these initial ripples became waves.

Later came the real estate market; Buenos Aires’ demographic growth; bohemian Argentines or lovers of architecture and neighborhoods with soul; foreigners enchanted by the history and magic of the area—aided by the exchange rate; and entrepreneurs looking for new prices and spaces accompanied by a media that became increasingly friendly. San Telmo became a fashionable neighborhood.

The last tree or four years seem like twenty if we measure them by the changes that have taken place: there are now 35 contemporary art spaces, 40 design stores and more than 130 bars and restaurants in less than 70 square blocks.
“Diversity and art are part of San Telmo’s particular magic,” is what the guidebooks say. But it’s the history and aesthetics of these new spaces and restored buildings that make this neighborhood so desirable.

Aurelia is from France, Jorge from Mendoza. Both returned to San Telmo after being away for a year and both had the same reaction: there are an increasing number of businesses here that are identical to those in other neighborhoods; more window displays of the same clothes, for example, and the list goes on.

San Telmo has something that attracts Argentines and foreigners alike: San Telmo. But the clock is ticking. Maybe we should take better care not to cross the delicate line toward losing our identity, a line that tends to get confused with the word progress.

In many cases it’s a simple matter of good taste. Of course a new business will open because it’s promising financially, but if that business builds on the aesthetics and flavor of the area, their prospects will be even more promising, or at least for a longer time.

It’s not necessary to be a shop founded decades ago to preserve this flavor, such as the bar La Coruña, where young and old people alike can breathe the air of San Telmo’s past and present.

The bar El Federal has only been operating for six years under its current owners, but it’s one of the most “classic” places in the area to sip a coffee or some cider on tap. As are places like Todo Mundo, Aconcagua, El Caracol. Or even, among the most recent additons, the resto-bar Las Mazorcas, which opened just three months ago but invested in creating an atmosphere that combines old-fashioned elegance and informality. And that effort is paying off, because the locals, who according to owner Diego Maizel, are “very protective of the neighborhood” are already becoming regulars. And it’s the locals and not the tourists who ultimate determine whether a business will be incorporated into the socio-economic fabric of the neighborhood, or if it’ll remain empty during the week.

However it’s not necessary to have exposed brick walls or a crystal chandelier in order to build upon San Telmo’s aesthetics. It’s about recognizing that we share the Historic District of one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and like the majority of historic districts, businesses and developers should understand that their profits will only last if they respect a certain logic of good taste and responsibility.

And there are many business owners who, even with a contemporary style, respect San Telmo’s beauty. Sometimes, but not always, at a cost—as if they understood the principle of good taste from the beginning, when they chose neighborhood.

Others simply throw up store windows that beg to be fined for imposing such a lack of sensitivity for the aesthetic standards and harmony of the neighborhood.

This is where the well-known saying applies: “There’s no written formula for good taste.” And that’s as it should be, but on the other hand there is plenty written about preserving Historic Districts tastefully.

San Telmo is energy-filled, quaint and funky on any day of the week, but on Sundays it truly comes to life. Centered around the Antiques Fair in Plaza Dorrego, and stretching down the cobblestone Calle Defensa, a Sunday visit to San Telmo is a highlight for visitors to Buenos Aires.

Artisans, musicians, street performers, and elderly antiques vendors come from near and far to share their treasures and their talents with the public. Start at the antiques market, which overflows in the Plaza Dorrego. From jewelry and dresses, to army helmets and tango records, you could spend hours sorting through the plethora of ancient goods. Even if antiques aren’t your thing, exploring the market is like having a key to your grandmother’s attic, or a window into Argentina’s past. If you aren’t satisfied with what is on offer in the Plaza, stroll down Defensa and there are dozens of well-established and stylish Antique stores to cater to your desires.

Calle Defensa, San Telmo’s main drag, becomes a pedestrian peatonal for most of the day on Sunday. You can take a long and mellow stroll down this classic street, and enjoy all that it has to offer in peace. Musicians and artists set up all along the avenue, from full scale Tango orchestras to solitary singers and everything in between. The traditional bevy of street artists are their to entertain, human statues painted in gold, clowns on stilts, and the most entertaining, the man caught in the storm, complete with blowing jacket and inverted umbrella.

Arts and crafts from local artisans are for sale up and down the strip and are fun to peruse. If you need a mate gourd, new silver earrings, or wooden crayons, then this is the place to be. Dozens of artists set up on Humberto Primo, running west of Plaza Dorrego, selling every manner of Tango art, paintings, pictures, sculptures, etc. And in a warehouse space, off the corner of the plaza, you can find inexpensive and handmade clothes, great for updating your wardrobe with typical Argentine fashions.

If hours of exploring in the sun have peaked your appetite then head off the main drag to one of San Telmo’s modern and tasty restaurants. Origin, on Peru and Humberto Primo, or Territorio, on Bolivar and Estados Unidos, serve up healthy and delicious meals, featuring a menu of the day that will satisfy even the most discerning taste buds. Or try an Argentine Picada, an assortment of meats, cheeses and olives, at one of the outdoor tables along Calle Chile. If you want a sandwich on the go, then grab a choripan at the stall on Carlos Calvo, one block west of Defensa. A true locals scene it can be highly entertaining to sit with the dozen men who seem to spend the better part of everyday here and enjoy your salty snack sitting under the awning.

San Telmo is full of art galleries, bookstores and traditional local cafes. Wander away from the tourists and check out what the rest of the neighborhood has to offer. A good selection of English language books can be found at Walrus Books (on Av. Estados Unidos 617), and local fashions can be found in any number of quirky boutiques. Grab a map of the area and check out some of its sites of interest, like the National Historical Museum, 1600 Defensa, or the baroque Iglesia Nuestra Senora de Belen, 340 Humberto Primo.

As the day winds to an end the vendors pack up their goods and the street performers remove their make up. But don’t leave just yet. As the plaza clears out, the restaurants set up and tables fill the square. A perfect spot to enjoy an evening aperitif, try Gancia an Argentine favorite, and relax for a few hours in the waning hours of daylight. At night, the plaza hosts an outdoor Milonga, an open tango dance party. Locals come down to enjoy the warm night air and show off their tango skills, and everyone mingles in this friendly community. The open air Milonga in Plaza Dorrego is a great way to enjoy tango and folkloric dances without paying the outrageous fees of an overly theatrical tango show for tourists.
